Bank Negara launches MyCoverageOKU, a directory of insurance and takaful plans for persons with disabilities
1 November 2026 · News · Rehab, therapy & TCM
Bank Negara Malaysia has launched MyCoverageOKU, a free microsite listing 107 insurance and takaful plans from 23 brands that persons with disabilities (OKU) can apply for. It does not sell plans or show prices, but it lets OKU, parents and caregivers filter plans by type and by whether medical underwriting applies, then contact the provider directly.
What was launched
MyCoverageOKU sits on BNM's MyCoverage site and was developed with the Financial Education Network and the insurance and takaful industry. It was reported by The Edge on 24 October and by RinggitPlus and Fintech News Malaysia in the days after.
It lists 107 plans from 23 brands. Users can filter by product type, product category and underwriting, and each listing shows the main benefits, whether underwriting is needed, the documents required and the provider's contact details. The site was built to web accessibility guidelines, with larger text, high contrast and simpler navigation, and is available in Malay and English.
What to watch out for
RinggitPlus' review of the listings points to several limits families should know before applying.
- The site does not sell policies or show prices; you request a quote from the insurer or takaful operator.
- Some listings are general products open to anyone, such as car or home cover, not OKU-specific plans.
- Only a handful of the medical and hospital plans pay hospital and surgical bills, and those need underwriting.
- Plans designed for OKU do not cover every disability, and pre-existing conditions can be excluded. Read each product disclosure sheet.
- Some providers ask for a JKM OKU card; others accept a doctor's letter.
Why it matters for families
Parents of children with autism, ADHD, Down syndrome or hearing and visual impairment, and families caring for an adult after a stroke or spinal injury, have long found it hard to tell which products will even accept an application. A single official directory makes the first step easier, though it is not advice on which plan to buy.
If a claim or application is turned down, complain to the provider first. If there is no reply within 14 days, you can escalate to BNM through BNMLINK, and the Financial Markets Ombudsman Service handles eligible disputes.
RinggitPlus also notes that MediAsas, the new standard basic medical plan, opens to the public in January 2027.
